There are many types of flowers, but they have one common feature: the larger lower petals, called the lip petals, are always perpendicular to the flanking petals. Many of the unique flower shapes on the branch stems gave the Oncidium orchid a common name: “Dancing Girl Orchid”. Oncidia fluttered in the wind, making them “dance”. In nature, almost all oncidium (pronounced onsideeum) are epiphytes growing on branches, and they fix themselves with thick roots.

• Good orchid care also includes direct and indirect sunlight. Don’t have space near a bright window? Fluorescent lights also work well.
• Keep the medium slightly moist during the growing season. Be careful not to overuse the water. Oncidiums store water in their pseudobulbs, making them more tolerant of dry soil than wet soil.
• Feed during active growth every 3 weeks with organic orchid fertilizer.
