Pennywort Plant, commonly known as the aquatic pennywort, the hydrocotyle verticillata belongs to the pennywort family and is popular with aquarists for its unique shape and growth pattern. It is native to the warmer, shallower water regions of North and South America. Hydrocotyle verticillata is a creeping plant and resembles mushroom or clover fields. Growing naturally in swamps and not too deep waterbeds, this creeper is best suited as a top plant in aquariums. This versatile plant can also be grown as a houseplant if the soil is kept moist. Hydrocotyle verticillata is a fairly undemanding plant and only the intensity of light plays a major role in its optimal growth.

Pennywort Plant care

• Pennywort will only keep its low decorative form if plenty of light is provided, although it can survive even in moderate lighting.
• Too many nutrients will lead to extremely fast growth and larger leaves, which is not ideal.
• Pennywort grows by sending runners, like lotus. To propagate this plant, simply cut the connection with the other plants using a pair of sharp scissors and replant where you want.
• Pennywort is relatively fragile and will not withstand “attacks” from herbivorous or destructive fish, so be sure to choose species that will not harm the plant.
